Abortion costs will vary, depending on how far along you are, the medical facility performing the abortion, which abortion method you choose, and whether or not your insurance offers any abortion coverage.

How Much Does an Abortion Cost

Here is a general estimate of average cost in Ohio for each abortion method:

Medical Abortion (up to 12 weeks): Approximately $650
Surgical Abortion (5 to 12 weeks): Approximately $650

Abortion Risks and Complications

Along with the cost of the abortion procedure, abortion clinics and medical facilities require you to have an ultrasound prior to an abortion. Medical Abortion Risks & Side Effects

The abortion pill may cause side effects similar to a miscarriage, which typically last about two weeks. Some of the more common side effects include:

  • Cramping and heavy bleeding with large clots
  • Spotting that can last for several days or weeks after taking the medication
  • Upset stomach (including nausea and/or diarrhea)
  • Dizziness and fatigue
  • Fever or chills (you’ll want to call your doctor right away if you experience a fever, as it could be a sign of infection)


Complications associated with the abortion pill include:

  • The pill’s failure to work
  • Blood clots in the uterus
  • Infection and sepsis
  • The presence of pregnancy tissues in the uterus after the procedure
  • Excessive or prolonged bleeding
  • Allergic reactions to the medications

Surgical Abortion Risks & Side Effects

After a surgical abortion, you may experience:

  • Bleeding similar to a period, which may last up to 2 weeks
  • Cramping 
  • Feeling sore and tired (sometimes disoriented, if sedation or general anesthetic is used)
  • Nausea and/or diarrhea

 

Potential complications of surgical abortion include:

  • Heavy bleeding during or following the procedure
  • Infection or sepsis
  • Severe pain, fever or unusual discharge
  • Damage to the cervix, womb or other organs
  • Allergic reaction to medications used during the procedure
  • The presence of pregnancy tissues in the uterus after the procedure, which may require a follow-up procedure
