Medical Abortion Pill Information

Abortion Pill
The abortion pill, also known as medical abortion, is generally available within the first 11 weeks after your last menstrual period. Contrary to its name, the pill consists of two drugs, which are taken in two separate doses, depending on the stage of your pregnancy. The first pill is used to end the pregnancy and keep it from growing. The second pill is then taken to induce early labor, causing cramping and bleeding, which will empty and push out the contents of the uterus.

Surgical Abortion Information

Aspiration
Aspiration, also known as “Suction Abortion” or “Vacuum Aspiration Abortion,” is a procedure typically conducted between 5 to 12 weeks of pregnancy. To begin, a doctor will administer a numbing medication to your cervix through a needle injection. Following this, metal rods will be used to gently widen the cervix. Once the cervix is dilated, a tube connected to a vacuum device will be inserted through the cervix and into the uterus. Suction will then be applied to remove the fetal tissues from the uterus, completing the procedure.

Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)
Dilation and Evacuation, commonly known as “D&E”, is a more complex procedure and is typically performed during the 12th to 21st week of pregnancy. Similar to the Aspiration method, D&E involves the use of different surgical tools to remove the fetus due to its larger size. Depending on the size of the fetus, it may be extracted either whole or in smaller parts. In cases where the fetus is intact, the head may need to be crushed to allow for it to fit through the cervix. Suction is then used to ensure that any remaining tissue is completely removed.
